[rat-forum] How much allelic pleomorphism is seen in an inbred strain?

I'm curious what defines an inbred vs. an outbred rat strain?

In order to determine if a rat strain is inbred I genotyped a dozen animals over 400 SSLP markers, 8.3% of which had two alleles, and one which had three alleles.

Does this make it inbred or outbred?

How much random variation (i.e. new mutations, changes, etc) are seen in colonies, and what is acceptable?

Thanks, Milt.
